Teaching bird's eye view

We have started the mapping part of our community unit! We borrowed some doll's house furniture from kindergarten land and used them to teach the concept of bird's eye view. This is something that my grade 1s find to be quite challenging when we work through mapping.

To help them with this, I set up the doll's furniture on a desk. We all gathered around it and talked about what we noticed. We crouched down and stood tall to see how that changed our view. Then I let them stand on a chair to look down on the furniture! They were thrilled!

Then we practiced drawing some objects together on the whiteboard. Once they seemed pretty comfortable with the concept, they made a map of our classroom with a partner!

How do you teach these tricky mapping concepts? I'm always looking for more ideas :)
